Friday Field Photo: Rare Anticline Outcrop in Afikpo

Everyone knows the Southern Benue trough is folded into a an Anticlinorium: a set of folds folded into a larger regional fold. Okay maybe not everyone but at least those who should know (Okay that statement is also tautological but you understand my drift). Rarely though, will you find whole scale outcrops of a full anticline or syncline in the southern Benue trough, thanks to a tropical climate and lush vegetation cover in most regions.

This photograph was taken by my colleague Dim, Chidozie at the Crush Rock Limited Quarry site along the Amaseri-Okposi Road in Ebonyi state. Highly indurated (quarryable) Turonian ( Sandstones belonging to the Amaseri Formation of the Eze-Aku Group have been folded into a gentle anticline.

This photo was taken in August of 2012. When I visited in March 2013 this incredible view had already been quarried off by the company.
